One of the most mystical experiences most travelers while visiting Marrakech is listening the Muslim prayer loud from the mosque’s speakers. This intense calling called the Adhan is the Islamic call to prayer and is recited by the muezzin five times a day. Muezzin is the chosen person at a mosque who leads the call to prayer.

The best to enjoy this beautiful call to prayer is from the top roof terrace of your riad in Marrakech where you are staying for the night, or from near the Koutoubia Mosque, or from the top of one café in Jemaa el-Fnaa square for example. You will be amazed by the intensity of sound and deep words. Even for non religious people, this nice moment is indeed remarkable.

Basically, the muezzin is calling Muslims to prayer inside the mosque. The words recited by the muezzin are: God is Greatest; I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is God’s Messenger; Come to salat (prayer); Come to success; God is greatest; There is no god except Allah. In arabic this sounds like this: Allahu Akbar; Ash-hadu al-la ilaha illa llah; Ash-hadu anna MuħammaduRasulullah; Hayya ‘ala s-salah; Hayya ‘ala ‘l-falah; Allāhu akbar; La ilaha illallah.
